College is Possible . . . for Adults

American Council on Education's Center for Adult Learning and Educational Credentialing
The American Council on Education has championed lifelong learning for more than 50 years. In 1942, the Center pioneered the evaluation of education and training attained outside the classroom. Today, the Center serves adult learners through three main programming activities:

General Educational Development (GED) Testing Support – You can take the GED Tests almost anywhere in the United States and Canada, as well as at more than 100 sites internationally. GED Testing Centers can often help to find you instruction so that you're prepared to pass the GED Tests. They can also arrange for changes in the way GED Tests are administered if you have a documented disability. The GED Tests measure your knowledge and academic skills against those of today's traditional high school graduates. ACE will tell you what to expect when you take the GED Tests, what your scores mean when you receive them in the mail, and how to use your GED diploma to enroll in a college or university program of your choice.

Military Programs – ACE's goal is to help you gain college credit for your military experience. ACE evaluation teams provide clear guidelines to interpret and recommend credit for formal service-school courses, demonstrated proficiency in military occupations, and college-level tests. ACE's credit recommendations help college and university officials evaluate the education you received while in the service. ACE publishes ther evaluation results and recommendations every two years in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. This is the standard reference tool used by most U.S. colleges and universities to award credit for military learning - and it is currently available online at http://www.militaryguides.acenet.edu/. Between publication dates, we provide a supplement called the Handbook to the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, which includes additional evaluations and other helpful information. Both the Handbook and the Guide are distributed to selected offices at all accredited institutions.

College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT) – ACE's College Credit Recommendation Service was developed to help adult learners obtain academic credit for learning acquired outside the traditional college classroom. ACE evaluates and makes credit recommendations for formal educational programs, courses, and examinations sponsored by organizations that are non-degree granting and that offer courses to their employees, members, or customers. These organizations include business and industry, labor unions, associations, institutes, training suppliers, schools, and government agencies. A team of college and university faculty with specific content expertise serves as reviewers who rigorously assess courses and examinations. After the review process, courses and examinations worthy of college credits are published in the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs or the Guide to Educational Credit by Examination. Both publications are distributed to college and university registrars, admissions officers, and university officials who rely heavily on these guides to evaluate an applicant's professional training for academic credit. Participating colleges and universities in Kentucky are:
