Student Demographics
The founding mission of KYVU was to make Kentucky's
postsecondary education system more accessible, efficient and
responsive to our citizens and businesses. One of KYVU's ongoing
goals is to increase the ranks of college enrollees and graduates
throughout the Commonwealth. Statistics show that, as KYVU opportunities
become more widely known, we are succeeding not only in Kentucky,
but also across the country!
- Student Enrollment. In less than the
three years since we opened the virtual campus, KYVU course
enrollments have increased dramatically-from 272 in the fall
of 1999 to a high of 6,281 in the spring of 2002. KYVU now
draws students from 35 states, in addition to Kentucky, and
11 foreign countries. All of Kentucky's 120
counties (34K PDF) are represented in the KYVU student
population. (Fall 2001)
- Gender. Sixty-eight percent women and
31 percent men (with 1 percent undisclosed) made up the KYVU
student population. (Fall 2001)
- Age. KYVU students represent a wide
range of age generations. Among those who responded, the highest
number of students comes from the 23 to 30-years-old bracket.
In descending order, from next highest to least are: 18 to
22 years old, 31 to 40 years old, 41 to 50 years old, and
under age 18. (Fall 2001)
- Ethnic Background. Ethnic demographics
of the KYVU enrollment are: ninety percent white, 6 percent
black, 1 percent Asian, 1 percent Hispanic, 1 percent non-resident
alien and 1 percent American Indian. (Fall 2001)
