Kentucky Virtual Library Earns Outstanding Library Award
FRANKFORT, KY (May 15, 2001) -
The Kentucky Virtual Library, at www.kyvl.org, was recently named
the Outstanding Library Program of the Southeast by the Southeastern Library Network
(Solinet). As the largest regional library network in the United States, Solinet represents over 800
libraries in 10 southeastern states and the Caribbean.
The Kentucky Virtual Library, established in November 1999, received the Multitype
Library Cooperation Award for its initiatives that foster cooperation among Kentucky libraries.
The state's participating libraries include 116 public libraries, 36 public universities and colleges,
19 independent universities and colleges, more than 1,200 K-12 schools and 22 special libraries.
"Solinet is pleased to be able to recognize the good work of the Kentucky Virtual Library
with this award. The Kentucky Virtual Library is a leader in serving the information needs of a
wide range of users, with creative and innovative programming," said Kate Nevins, executive
director of Solinet.
Miko Pattie, director of the virtual library, added, "This award is a tribute to the state's
librarians who have worked hard to make the KYVL a reality. Our goal is to level the playing
field to quality information resources for all Kentuckians."
Also at the Solinet annual membership meeting May 4, Pattie was elected by her
colleagues to the SOLINET Board of Directors.
The Kentucky Virtual Library offers 32 electronic databases with 5,000 full-text journals,
a resource-sharing system with statewide courier service for materials, the Kentuckiana Digital
Library, a virtual reference desk, tutorials on information literacy, and digital services for K-12
students, teachers and parents. The services are offered at no charge to Kentucky residents and
students of the Kentucky Virtual University.
