LEXINGTON, Ky. (February 9, 2001) -

Dr. Mary Beth Susman, chief executive officer for the Kentucky Virtual University, will be a keynote speaker at the Fifth Annual China-U.S. Conference on Education in Beijing, People's Republic of China, in June.

Susman will showcase Kentucky's pioneering efforts in online learning which have earned both national and international prominence. The four-day event will address issues of mutual concern for both U.S. and Chinese educators. Topics include technology in education, leadership and systemic change, student-centered instruction and curriculum reform.

Kentucky Virtual University opened at www.kyvu.org in Fall 1999 and is a one-stop Web site for quality courses, programs and student services. Twenty-eight Kentucky colleges and universities, as well as numerous professional development providers, participate in the statewide, online learning initiative.

Created by the Kentucky General Assembly with the passage of the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act in 1997, the university includes the Kentucky Virtual Library. The library is free to Kentucky residents and virtual university students. Students can access more than 30 electronic databases and nearly 5,000 full-text journal and newspaper titles at www.kyvl.org.
