Chief Academic Officer Named for Commonwealth Virtual University

Frankfort KY (June 22, 1999) -

Dr. Mary Beth Susman, CEO of the Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual University, today announced the selection of Myk Garn as Chief Academic Officer for the KCVU. Mr. Garn, currently the Director of Distance Learning for the university system of the State of Georgia, will begin his new duties June 25.

Garn has a proven history as producer, manager and administrator of statewide and national learning technologies and distance education projects and has held leadership positions in the academic and corporate sectors.

Dr. Susman said the Chief Academic Officer will provide support to faculty, deans and chief academic officers for the timely, effective implementation of distance learning courses. He will also manage vendors and consultants responsible for faculty development, training, and course management.

"Myk Garn has an impressive record of achievement in the fields of distance learning and academic technology," Dr. Susman said. "As Chief of Academics for the KCVU, Mr. Garn will administer a wide range of programs to enhance development of a comprehensive catalog of course offerings and help establish overall academic policy and quality control to guide the implementation and expansion of KCVU programs and services. We are very pleased to welcome him aboard."

The KCVU facilitates instruction and learning "any time, any place," using distance education technology enabling students to take courses via satellite, over the Internet, and through inter-active television. When fully operational, KCVU students will have access to an extensive virtual library and certificate and degree programs offered by Kentucky postsecondary institutions. The KCVU's aim is to expand access to postsecondary education all across Kentucky, especially for those whose jobs and family responsibilities make it impossible to travel to the state's colleges and universities. It also will provide Kentucky students with access to the best teaching and information resources available electronically throughout the nation and the world.
