About the Courses

  • How You "Attend" Class
When you have requested and been accepted into a course, you will be provided with a username and password which you can use to login from the KYVU home page. Once you have logged in you can access your coursework, and communicate with your instructor and other students in your course through email, chat and discussion groups.

  • Average Time Commitment
You will need to access your online course material as often as three times a week, depending on the instructor. Just like an on-campus course, you should be prepared to commit a total of approximately 2-1/2 hrs a week to a 3 credit hour course.

You should also plan to allow 5 - 7 hours a week for reading, research or course assignments. If you're new to the Internet, it may take you a few days to become comfortable with the software and other technology.

  • Assignments & Tests
Most instructors request that you submit class assignments online through email or the KYVU course management system. Many instructors allow you to take tests online, but some will require you to go to campus for the test. Each course's description page will specifies how tests are given for that course.

Choosing a Program

  • Defining Your Goals
The program and courses you select will depend on your goal. If you are seeking a degree, you will need to select and apply to a program. You will choose courses that fulfill requirements of your degree program. Or, you may simply want to improve your skills or knowledge of a subject which interests you. You might begin by looking through the programs and course schedules by discipline, then read the in-depth course descriptions. Browse KYVU's programs and courses.

  • Applying to a Program
To apply to a program for certification, contact the program coordinator directly. This person, as well as information on how to make contact, is listed with the program description in the 'Programs and Courses' section.

Selecting a "Home College"

  • Your Degree Comes from the Institution of Your Choice
Although KYVU provides access to courses, you are technically a student of a particular college or university. This institution will be your "home" institution. Generally, this will be the institution offering the degree you are earning. KYVU does not issue academic credit or degrees. If you complete a program offered through KYVU, your degree will bear the name of the college or university in which you are enrolled.

If you are a student of KCTCS (Kentucky Community and Technical College System), you may take online courses at several community or technical colleges from around the state, but you still need to choose one of these as your home college. This will be the college that will appear on your diploma or certificate. Although the determination of home college is your choice, most students select the college closest to them for this designation.

  • Attending Courses from more than One Institution
If you take a course from a different institution other than your home college:

    • You will have to pay tuition to the institution offering the course because it won't be part of your normal tuition.
    • You may have additional fees, depending on the institution and course.
    • You will have to make all arrangements for having the course transferred and accepted by your "home" institution as a requirement of your degree program.

These restrictions do not apply if your home college is in the KCTCS and you are taking courses from a variety of KCTCS colleges.

Registration and Textbooks

  • Enrollment and Registration
KYVU is designed as a one-stop resource for your convenience. You can apply for admission, request and access your classes via KYVU. One of the advantages of KYVU is that you only need to provide one application and one application fee. This single application applies to as many colleges as you choose. We submit your application to the college(s) offering the course(s) in which you are interested.

To enroll in or request a class, go to Programs and Courses and click on "Request Enrollment" for either college credit or professional training courses. Note: If you have requested courses via KYVU previously, submit the request form for "Current KYVU Student." If you are a new student, submit the form for "New KYVU Student."
